AI in Logistics Saudi Arabia: Four Jobs to Start With

AI in logistics Saudi Arabia: a line-art warehouse with shipping containers and a data network for logistics operations

Key takeaways

  • GASTAT data reported by Arab News shows 44.4% of Saudi transportation and storage establishments used AI in 2025, against 33.1% of all establishments, so logistics firms are above the national average.
  • The National Transport and Logistics Strategy targets 10% of GDP and about SAR 45 billion in annual non-oil revenue from the sector by 2030, and the ministry has a dedicated unit for innovation including AI.
  • Start with the paperwork and the forecasts, not robots: delivery notes and customs papers, shipment volumes, damage checks and status enquiries, each with a person approving exceptions.

AI in logistics Saudi Arabia has moved from conference talk to daily operations. This guide is written for owners and operations managers of freight, trucking, warehousing and delivery companies in Dammam, Khobar, Riyadh and Jeddah who want to know where the data says the sector stands, and which jobs are worth starting with.

AI in logistics Saudi Arabia: where the sector stands

The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) reports that 33.1% of Saudi establishments used AI technologies in 2025. According to Arab News’ report of the survey, transportation and storage reached 44.4%, which is above the national figure and below information and communications (61.1%), finance and insurance (52.9%) and education (51%).

This is establishment-level data. It does not say which tools are used or how deeply, and a company can count as a user after trying one chatbot. Still, it tells you that a logistics firm with no AI in its operations is now in the minority of its own sector.

What the national logistics strategy asks of the sector

The National Transport and Logistics Strategy aims to raise the sector’s contribution to GDP to 10% and its annual non-oil revenue to about SAR 45 billion by 2030, according to Saudipedia’s summary of the strategy. The same source says the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services has launched an initiative to catalogue emerging transport technologies and has a dedicated unit to advance innovative solutions, including AI.

The Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services will also host the second Global Logistics Forum in Riyadh from 29 November to 1 December 2026, according to a release carried by Bernama on 18 August 2026. For a mid-sized firm, the practical meaning is that shippers, ports and government clients will expect faster, more accurate and better-documented service.

What large operators are doing

The largest players are automating physical handling. GCC Business News reported in January 2025 that Aramex opened an automated sorting facility at Jeddah Islamic Port with 120 robotic guided vehicles, designed to process 4,000 shipments an hour, or 96,000 a day. A facility of that kind is far beyond the budget of most mid-sized firms, and it is not where we suggest you start.

Four logistics jobs where AI helps first

These are our recommendations, based on where logistics teams repeat the same work every day. In each case AI reads, forecasts and flags, and your staff keep every decision about a customer, a fee or a shipment on hold.

  • Delivery notes, invoices and customs papers: read them into your ERP or transport system without re-typing, and flag missing or mismatched fields before a shipment is held. Our document processing automation solution covers this, and our post on ZATCA customs clearance in 2026 explains why complete paperwork matters.
  • Shipment volume forecasts: use past shipments, seasons and customer orders to estimate next week’s volume, so you can plan drivers, trucks and warehouse shifts. Our predictive analytics solution covers this.
  • Damage and pallet checks: use warehouse and dock cameras to count pallets and flag damaged parcels at receiving. Our computer vision solution covers this.
  • Status enquiries: answer “where is my shipment?” on WhatsApp and web chat in Arabic and English from your tracking data, and pass exceptions to a person. Our AI customer service agents solution covers this.

Start with the first item if your coordinators spend the day typing documents. Start with the fourth if your phones ring all day with status questions. Each gives you a clear number to track, such as minutes per document or calls per day.

Rules to set before AI touches shipment data

Logistics records hold personal data: customer names, phone numbers, delivery addresses and driver details. The Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) applies to how you collect, store and use it, and our post on PDPL compliance for Saudi businesses explains what SDAIA has enforced so far. Check the details for your own case with a qualified adviser.

Three habits keep a logistics firm safe. Share only the data a task needs, decide where the data is hosted before you choose a tool, and keep a person in charge of anything that holds a shipment, changes a fee or answers a customer complaint.

A six-step starting checklist

  • Measure one week of current work: documents handled, hours spent typing them, and status calls received.
  • Pick the one job from the list above with the clearest weekly cost.
  • Check that the data it needs, such as shipment records, tracking updates and document templates, can be read by your systems.
  • Run a pilot for four to eight weeks with one team or one route, and compare the results with step one.
  • Write down who reviews the AI’s output, and when a person takes over, for example a held shipment or a customs mismatch.
  • Decide whether to extend the pilot to other teams once the numbers are clear.

Where to start

You do not need to replace your transport management system or ERP. Most of the value comes from connecting AI to the systems and documents you already have, which is the work of our AI Integration service.
